AI phishing: Why click-through rates increase by a factor of 3 – focus on security

According to a study by TU Berlin, the click-through rates for phishing mails generated with AI increase by a factor of 3. The reason for this is the better personalization that AI systems enable. Traditional phishing attacks are often poorly worded and seem unprofessional, while AI-generated messages seem almost identical to legitimate emails. This makes it easier for users to fall for the attack and open the dangerous links. The study thus highlights the increasing threat posed by AI-based cyberattacks and the need to protect themselves accordingly.

The use of AI in cybercrime is a new phenomenon that is fundamentally changing the security landscape. An open-weight model like Inkling from the US is considered a strong tool that comes close to Chinese models in performance. Although Chinese models are still ahead in benchmarks, it shows that AI systems from different regions are increasingly able to generate high-quality text – and thus dangerous content. This makes security in dealing with emails and digital communication channels even more important.

To ward off such attacks, it is critical to implement security measures that can detect and block AI-generated phishing mail. A web mailer such as Roundcube regularly publishes updates that close security gaps and prevent malware insertion. Such measures are an important step towards digital security, but they alone are not enough. AI phishing requires a holistic security strategy that takes into account both technical and human factors.

The combination of AI and human intuition can be an effective solution. An article by heise+ discusses how AI like ChatGPT can be used in educational situations to support learning. At the same time, it shows that AI can also play a role in cybersecurity if it is used to detect and block phishing attacks. Integrating AI into security solutions is therefore a promising approach to mitigate the dangers of AI phishing.
