AI for Predicting Violence Risks: Ethics, Technology and the Future

The prediction of risks of violence by AI is an issue that brings both technological and ethical challenges. In Michigan, the Department of Justice plans to use an AI system to better assess prisoners’ risk of violence. This concept, reminiscent of the movie *Minority Report*, aims to increase security in prison and use resources more efficiently. However, the use of AI in such contexts requires a careful balance between technical precision and ethical responsibility. While AI systems can analyze large amounts of data and recognize patterns, they cannot replace human intuition and understanding of complex social and psychological factors. Therefore, it is crucial that AI systems serve as decision support in such applications and not act as sole decision makers. Another aspect is whether AI increases or reduces the demand for human thinking. One article discusses that AI does not make humans superfluous, but rather reinforces the need for critical thinking and ethical reflection. Similarly, experiments such as AI agents’ attempts to build a civilization in Minecraft show that AI can be used not only in technical but also in social and cultural contexts. However, such systems can easily drift into bureaucracy and complexity, highlighting the need for human intervention. At the same time, Saudi Aramco’s investment in Humain shows how companies and states see AI as a key technology for the future. They rely on AI to secure competitive advantages and drive innovation. In this context, it is important to consider AI not only as a tool, but also as part of a larger strategy to improve safety, efficiency and innovation. However, the integration of AI into existing systems requires a clear delineation of responsibilities and a clear definition of the boundaries within which AI can be used. AI systems must be transparent, traceable and ethically responsible in order to gain trust and minimise risks. Overall, AI is able to solve complex problems, but it is not able to replace all aspects of human decision-making. The future of AI technology lies in its ability to complement, not replace, human capabilities. It increases the demand for thought, not the need for human labor. In this sense, AI is a tool that supports human creativity and intelligence, rather than replacing it.
