AI bots in the application process: automation and challenges

The introduction of AI bots into the application process has led to a fundamental change in human resource management in recent years. Some companies use AI-powered systems to automatically interview applicants, negotiate salary and even schedule appointments – without the applicant himself being involved. This approach, which is described in the press as 'chaos in the application process', elicits different reactions from both applicants and recruiters. While some praise the efficiency and scalability of such systems, others criticize the lack of transparency and the potential violation of applicants’ rights.

The use of AI bots in the application process is not only a technical project, but also an ethical challenge. The automation of calls and contracts can shorten the processing time, but also displace the human component in the recruitment process. Experts warn that the lack of interaction between applicants and companies can affect the quality of the selection and lead to faulty decisions. There are also concerns about data security and data protection compliance, especially when AI systems process sensitive applicant data.

In addition to these challenges, it also shows that AI systems are able to take on complex tasks. For example, Nvidia has unveiled an open agent model with 120 billion parameters that makes it possible to operate AI agents locally on computers. Meta has also released a new open-weight model with 816 billion parameters optimized for local operation on Apple M5 systems. These developments underline that AI systems are able to play an increasing role not only in technology but also in recruitment.

However, the introduction of such systems requires careful planning and a clear legal basis. The Bundestag recently released the legal basis for digital wallets, establishing the national legal basis for digital identities. In the future, this development could help protect the rights of users when dealing with digital systems and at the same time strengthen the basis of trust in AI-supported processes.

Automation in the application process is therefore a topic that brings both opportunities and risks. It remains to be seen how the balance between efficiency and human interaction will develop in the future.
