AI-generated fraud attempts: How technology threatens communications

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in various areas, but it can also pose risks in communication. An Italian banker was tempted by AI-generated WhatsApp messages and calls from his lawyer to release €95 million. The fraudsters used AI here to simulate authentic communication and thus gain the trust of the victims. Such attacks demonstrate the importance of integrating security measures and authentication systems into communication channels. Another example is the use of AI on the darknet, where an ex-black hat advertiser used AI and data analytics to expose a multi-billion dollar music streaming scam. This underlines that AI can be used not only for endangerment but also for the investigation of fraud attempts. At the same time, the increasing proliferation of AI-generated messages and calls requires greater attention to communication and a better understanding of the risks involved. Another approach is to integrate local AI models into text editing tools like LibreOffice or Obsidian to use as a writing aid. This allows better control over the creation and editing of texts. However, the challenge remains how to communicate effectively in crisis situations when traditional channels are overwhelmed or no longer secure. Resilient technologies are critical to maintaining communication despite security threats. Overall, it shows that AI brings both risks and opportunities. The development and use of AI technologies must therefore be carefully considered to ensure both the security and efficiency of communications.
